Hello!
I’m Andrew, a 19 year old college student living in Southern California with my two parents and my two younger siblings. As a family, we’ve always had an issue with planning things to do together on the weekend. We all have VERY different interests and ideas of what is considered “fun.” As someone who loves finance and saving money, I’m challenging myself to use my infinite creativity to combine my finance skills with my planning skills in finding fun and free things to do that will satisfy my whole family. I'll share my discoveries, plans and reviews in this blog!
My Story
I've been going to community college for the last 2 years. Initially, I aimed to get into the nursing program there so I worked like crazy and managed to not only get all my prerequisites completed by my first semester, but I also got an associate's degree. I was set to be in the nursing program by the start of my second year and I was proud of it. All I had left to do was to study for and get a good score on the ATI TEAS, which is basically just an SAT for the nursing program. Hence, I ordered the study book for the ATI TEAS. But then, I started to think about my life as a future nurse and it didn't feel right. My main motivation for becoming a nurse was that it was a stable job with good money. On the other hand, I didn't want to be trapped into working long, tiring shifts where I had to be constantly on my feet and interacting with an array of strangers. Of course, I liked the idea of being able to help people too, but not if that came at the price of my personal health. In the end, the cons outweighed the mediocre pros for me so I stopped pursuing that path. I continued to take classes but instead of taking classes for a specific major, I took what I considered as "fun classes." To me, this was anything that I thought would benefit me in some way. This ranged from ASL to Marketing to Music to Child Development to Ceramics to Choreography. As you can see, my interests were far-reaching and I didn't shy away from a challenge. While taking all of these classes, I realized that I needed a job where I could be creative, where I could apply everything that I've learned and learn even more each day. Eventually, that idea propelled me to where I am now: Social Media class. Originally, I took this class because I thought I could use my small youtube channel for my assignments. I'd be making videos like I already was doing and I'd have the class to hold me even more accountable to growing my channel. Unfortunately and fortunately, I was told that I couldn't use my small channel for my assignments. This was a complete bummer to me at first. The main reason for me taking the class had been botched within the first week. Most people would've dropped out of the class at that point, but as you have seen, I'm not like most people. I came up with the idea of Wabi Sabi Fun after thinking about how my family always seems to spend so much when we go out on the weekends. My parents are strong believers of needing to spend money to have fun. I wanted to show them that we could have sustainable fun without having to empty our wallets. I've always been a big saver and seeing them spend money on things that will only bring them momentary joy was a little heartbreaking. I couldn't just explain the free and affordable alternatives, I needed to show them. So here I am with Wabi Sabi Fun, an account of my journey with my family and also a resource for anyone who wants a piece of the free pie.
